From its humble roots in the early 1970’s, Hip Hop has gone from ’emcees’ rapping over break-beats at house parties in New York to emerging as one of the most prominent genres in popular music. Enter Neo Soul
In the late 1980s and into the ’90’s, a new flavor of contemporary music took the stage. Combining elements of Jazz, Soul, Fusion, and R and B, delivered by legendary singer/songwriters, Neo Soul would become a term for a musical genre that spanned everything from avant-garde soul to romantic slow jams. Even though the moniker “neo soul” has not always been broadly accepted by the artists it is meant to represent, one thing is certain, the music and movement are alive and well to this day.
